What is Liquid Laughter?
The Liquid Laughter Project is a collaborative writing project
in which twelve authors, given a set of characters and a premise, write a
full-length novel in the round-robin style, with each author producing one
chapter. Medicine
Show is the first volume of the Liquid Laughter Project. It
was written over the time period of May 2005 to May 2006, and will be
released on November 11, 2006. The second volume of the project,
Freedomhowler, Finchley, and Co., will begin on November 1, 2006, and
will be released in October of 2008.

The Setting
The story takes place in the year 1920, and concerns a travelling medicine
show making its way around the rubble-strewn
graveyard that is Western Europe at the end of World War I. |
The
Core Characters
Bernhard Freedomhowler: The formerly American,
firebreathing (literally) snake-oil salesman, whose particular specialty
is devising bizarre new remedies for every human malady— both physical and
otherwise—under the sun. |
Grenadine Anna Ashcom: The delicate and
sickly-sweet former English field nurse turned shell-shocked psychic
"medium" of no real ability.
Nature’s Own Remedy (whom the others call
"Norris" for short): The rather quiet young man of former Austrian
heritage who claims to have been raised by feral dogs, never wears
clothes, and is continually performing heroic deeds.
Calliope the Whistle-Pig: The formerly French,
strangely man-like orphan "boy," who provides light entertainment for the
crowds with his unusual ability to whistle through his ears.
Heather McInnerney: The formerly Scottish
hill-fort of a woman; at 6’7" and three hundred pounds, she pulls the
show's wagon, both
figuratively and literally.
